The World Just Noticed Sri Lanka's Wellness Industry

In June 2026, BookRetreats.com published its State of Retreats 2026 Report. It ranked Sri Lanka as the world's top trending wellness destination, ahead of Australia, Morocco, England, and Spain. The number behind that ranking is striking: wellness traveller demand for Sri Lanka grew 100 percent year on year.

That is not a small bump. It is the kind of growth that gets noticed by travel media, tour operators, and the next wave of travellers deciding where to book a retreat. BookRetreats attributed Sri Lanka's rise to three things: its 2,000-year-old Ayurvedic tradition, its affordability compared to similar experiences in Europe, and its natural attractions, from year-round beaches to wild elephants and blue whales.

"Wellness travellers do not just visit once. They spend more, stay longer, and tell people. The question is whether the payment experience matches the product they came for."

About This Ranking
This ranking reflects year-on-year growth in unique page views on BookRetreats.com, a wellness retreat booking platform, alongside a survey of 1,040 US travellers conducted between December 2025 and January 2026. It is a strong signal of rising demand on one major platform, not an official government or independent market measurement.

Tourist Arrivals Are Climbing to Record Highs

Sri Lanka closed 2025 with 2,362,521 tourist arrivals, up 15.1 percent from the year before, and ahead of the country's previous 2018 peak. The momentum has been building for several years.

Tourism earnings reached USD 3.22 billion in 2025, though earnings per tourist softened slightly as arrivals grew faster than total spend.

India Leads, But Europe Brings the Wellness Crowd

India is now Sri Lanka's largest source market by volume. But for wellness and Ayurveda specifically, Germany stands out, contributing more than half of all tourists who name health and Ayurveda as their primary reason for visiting.

Germany's Ayurveda Connection
Of all tourists who cited health or Ayurveda as their main purpose for visiting Sri Lanka in the first half of 2025, German travellers made up roughly 53 percent. These are exactly the guests most accustomed to cashless, contactless payments at home, and most likely to be surprised by a cash-only Ayurveda retreat in the hills of Kandy.

A Premium Industry, Running on a Cash Economy

Here is the tension at the centre of this opportunity. Sri Lanka is being celebrated globally for a high-value, premium travel experience. But the infrastructure underneath it has not caught up. Industry estimates put cash transactions at 90 to 95 percent of all retail activity in the country.

90 to 95% Cash

Hotels, supermarkets, urban restaurants

This is not a criticism of the country's progress. Digital payment infrastructure has actually moved quickly. LankaQR, the Central Bank's national QR standard, now reaches more than 400,000 merchants.

The gap is not technology. It is reach. Wellness retreats, spice gardens, Ayurveda centres, and tuk-tuk transfers—the exact businesses serving the guests this BookRetreats ranking is about to send—are often the last to adopt these tools.

The Math Behind a Wellness Traveller

Wellness travellers are not average tourists. Globally, the Global Wellness Institute found that international wellness tourists spend about 41 percent more per trip than typical international travellers. They also tend to stay longer and book higher-value experiences.

Ayurveda Resorts & Retreats

Accept card payments for multi-day packages and treatments, including international cards from the German, UK, and Australian guests driving this demand.

Spas & Day Wellness Centres

Send a payment link for advance bookings instead of relying on walk-in cash. A guest can confirm and pay from their phone before they ever arrive.

Boutique Villas

Kandy, the south coast, and the Cultural Triangle are where most wellness travel happens, and where card acceptance is often thinnest. A simple payment link changes that.

Tour Operators & Transfers

Bundle transport, guided tours, and retreat bookings into a single invoice payment link, so guests pay once instead of juggling cash for every leg of the trip.

What This Means for Your Payment Setup

OnePay was built for exactly this kind of gap: a growing industry, an international audience, and a need for payments that work as smoothly as the experience being sold.
